Biography

Herman Branover is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; magnetohydrodynamics

How & why

Branover was a Russian-Israeli physicist and a leading authority on magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), the study of electrically conducting fluids in magnetic fields, with applications to energy conversion. A Jewish 'refusenik' in the USSR, he lost his academic post for insisting on living openly as a Jew before emigrating to Israel and joining Ben-Gurion University. He was also a prominent Chabad-affiliated author, translator and educator who bridged science and Jewish observance.
