Scarf was a Yale economist who devised the first general algorithm for computing economic equilibria — the simplicial fixed-point methods that launched applied general-equilibrium analysis — and made foundational contributions to inventory theory; he won the von Neumann Theory Prize in 1983. He was of Ukrainian-Jewish immigrant descent, born in Philadelphia.
