Origins and early life
Jacques Helbronner was born in the ninth arrondissement of Paris on 21 September 1873 into a Jewish bourgeois family: his father Horace was a lawyer, his mother was called Hermance Rebecca, and he married Jeanne Weisweiller.
Work and career
He entered the Conseil d'État in 1898 and rose to be president of a section, one of the highest posts in the French administration, until the antisemitic laws of Vichy forced him out in October 1940. He was president of the Central Consistory, the body governing organised Judaism in France, from 1940 until his deportation. A long-standing acquaintance of Marshal Pétain, he used that access again and again to plead the case of French Jews and to protest the measures taken against them, and he opposed the creation of the UGIF, the single Jewish organisation the occupier wanted; he could not prevent it but delayed it by several months.
His standing did not protect him: he was arrested and interned at Drancy, and deported with his wife by convoy 62 on 20 November 1943. Both were murdered in the gas chambers on arrival at Auschwitz on 23 November 1943.
