Veneziano is widely regarded as the father of string theory: in 1968 he found that the Euler beta function reproduces the scattering amplitude of strongly interacting particles, a discovery soon interpreted as describing vibrating strings and launching the entire field. He did his doctorate at the Weizmann Institute in Israel and spent much of his career at CERN and the Collège de France. He was born in Florence into an Italian Jewish family.
