Fubini was an Italian theoretical physicist and one of the pioneers of string theory, whose work at MIT and CERN on dual resonance models helped lay the foundations of the field. He also made lasting contributions to quantum field theory. He was Jewish and, as a boy in 1938, fled fascist Italy's antisemitic racial laws to Switzerland; in later life he was active in Israeli–Arab peace efforts.
