Ernst Tugendhat

Tugendhat was a leading German analytic philosopher who brought the tradition of language analysis into dialogue with the phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger, writing influential works on self-consciousness, ethics and formal semantics. Born into a German-speaking Jewish family, he fled Nazi persecution with his relatives, spending years in Switzerland and Venezuela before returning to teach in Germany. His Jewish origin and the experience of exile shaped his later reflections on ethics and belonging.
