How & why

Ernst Boris Chain was a German-born Jewish biochemist who fled Nazi Germany for Britain. With Howard Florey he turned Alexander Fleming's penicillin into a usable, mass-producible drug, work that earned them and Fleming the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. His research helped launch the antibiotic era that transformed modern medicine.
