How & why

Courant co-invented the strong-focusing (alternating-gradient) principle, the breakthrough that made modern high-energy particle accelerators possible, for which he received the Enrico Fermi Award in 1986. The son of the mathematician Richard Courant, he fled Nazi Germany and built his career in the United States. He was born into a Jewish family in Göttingen.
