Zelig Eshhar is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Immunologist who invented the CAR-T cell, the basis of modern cancer immunotherapy.
Eshhar, an Israeli immunologist born Zelig Lipka in Petah Tikva, invented in the late 1980s at the Weizmann Institute the chimeric antigen receptor — fusing an antibody's target-recognition region to T-cell signalling machinery so that a patient's own T cells can be aimed at cancer. His 'T-body' concept is the direct basis of today's CAR-T therapies, among the most powerful cancer immunotherapies. He was widely honoured as a father of the field.
