Warburg was a physicist who made foundational contributions to the study of magnetism — including the magnetic hysteresis loop and the magnetocaloric effect that bears his name — as well as gas kinetics and photochemistry. He presided over the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt and mentored figures such as James Franck. He was born into the prominent Jewish Warburg family of Altona, to Orthodox Jewish parents, converted to Protestantism as an adult, and was the father of Nobel laureate Otto Warburg.
