Warburg was a physicist who made foundational contributions to the study of magnetism — including the magnetic hysteresis loop and the magnetocaloric effect that bears his name — as well as gas kinetics and photochemistry. He presided over the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt and mentored figures such as James Franck. He belonged to the prominent Jewish Warburg family, and was the father of Nobel laureate Otto Warburg.
