Karl Weissenberg was an Austrian-born physicist and a founder of modern rheology — the science of how materials flow and deform. He described the 'Weissenberg effect', in which certain fluids climb a rotating rod, and devised instruments to measure elastic stresses in liquids. A Jewish scientist, he fled Nazi Germany and continued his career in Britain.
