Biography

Paul Epstein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; theory of the Stark effect in atomic spectra

How & why

Paul Sophus Epstein was a physicist who, independently of Karl Schwarzschild, gave the quantum theory of the Stark effect — the splitting of atomic spectral lines by an electric field — a landmark early success of quantum theory. Born into a Jewish family in Warsaw, he worked in Germany before emigrating and becoming a longtime professor at Caltech. His theoretical work spanned atomic physics, relativity and quantum mechanics.
