Biography

Donald Ornstein is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Ergodic theory; the Ornstein isomorphism theorem

How & why

Ornstein is an American mathematician at Stanford University who transformed ergodic theory. His isomorphism theorem (1970) proved that two Bernoulli shifts with equal entropy are measure-theoretically isomorphic, resolving a long-standing problem and giving entropy a decisive role. He was born into a Jewish family in New York City.
