Sciama was one of the most influential cosmologists of the twentieth century, remembered as much for his own work on the origin of inertia and Mach's principle as for the extraordinary generation of physicists he mentored, including Stephen Hawking, Martin Rees and Brandon Carter. He helped revive general relativity as an active research field. He came from a Sephardi Jewish family of Syrian (Aleppo) origin.
