Ralph Alpher was an American cosmologist whose PhD work with George Gamow laid out Big Bang nucleosynthesis — how light elements formed in the early universe — and who, with Robert Herman, predicted the cosmic microwave background radiation in 1948. He was Jewish, from a family of Russian Jewish immigrants, and reported facing antisemitic barriers early in his career. The later confirmation of the microwave background validated his prediction and became decisive evidence for the Big Bang.
