David Gottlieb was an Israeli-American applied mathematician, a central figure in the development of high-order and spectral methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations, especially time-dependent problems and their stability. He taught at Tel Aviv University and, from 1985, at Brown University, and co-authored a classic 1977 monograph on spectral methods with Steven Orszag. Born and educated in Israel, he was Jewish.
