Shapiro was an MIT professor of mechanical engineering and a leading figure in fluid mechanics, author of the classic two-volume treatise 'The Dynamics and Thermodynamics of Compressible Fluid Flow' and founder of the National Committee for Fluid Mechanics Films. He was Jewish, born and raised in Brooklyn to Jewish Lithuanian immigrant parents.
