Biography

David Deutsch is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; pioneer of quantum computation and the universal quantum computer

How & why

Born in Haifa, Israel, Deutsch is a British physicist based at Oxford and a founder of the theory of quantum computation. In 1985 he described the universal quantum computer and showed that quantum systems could in principle compute things faster than any classical machine, laying the theoretical foundation for an entire field. A leading proponent of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, his ideas launched the quest to build quantum computers.
