David Azrieli fled Poland in 1939, crossed the Soviet Union, Central Asia and Iraq to reach Palestine, studied architecture at the Technion and fought with the Haganah's 7th Brigade in 1948. He emigrated to Montreal in 1954 and built shopping centres in Canada, the United States and Israel — the Ayalon mall in Ramat Gan, the first enclosed mall in the country, then Malha in Jerusalem and the three towers of the Azrieli Center in Tel Aviv. His foundation funds architecture, education, and a programme that has published the memoirs of hundreds of Canadian Holocaust survivors.
