Frank Lowy

Frank Lowy was born to a Slovak-Hungarian Jewish family in 1930, was confined to a ghetto in Hungary as a boy, and lost his father at Auschwitz. He reached Palestine illegally, joined the Haganah and fought with the Golani Brigade in the 1948 war, then joined his family in Australia in 1952 with nothing. From a single suburban shop he built Westfield into a shopping-centre group with $29.3 billion of assets under management across the United States, Britain and Europe. He chaired Australian football's governing body, funds the Lowy Institute for International Policy and Israel's Institute for National Security Studies, and moved to Israel in 2018.
