Lea Gottlieb was born in 1918 in Sajószentpéter, Hungary, and survived the Holocaust in hiding while her husband Armin was conscripted into a forced-labour battalion. The couple reached Israel in 1949 with almost nothing; she sold her wedding ring to buy fabric, and in 1956 founded Gottex in Tel Aviv. Treating a swimsuit as couture — hand-finished, print-led, drawn from the flowers and colours of Israel — she built the country's flagship fashion export, worn by princesses and film stars from Diana of Wales to Elizabeth Taylor, and stayed at its drawing board into her eighties.
