Biography

Dan Houser is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Co-founded Rockstar Games and was head writer of the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series

How & why

Daniel Houser was born in London in November 1973, the younger brother of Sam; their paternal grandfather Isaac Houser was an Austrian Jewish immigrant to England. He read at Christ Church, Oxford, and co-founded Rockstar Games with his brother in 1998, serving as head writer and vice-president of creativity until 2020. He wrote the Grand Theft Auto games from III onward and the Red Dead Redemption series, work that pushed video games towards long-form character writing and satire of American life and won repeated writing awards from the industry. The games are made for adults and are deliberately violent and profane, which is what most of the argument about them concerns.
