Brett Goldstein was born in London on 17 July 1980 to a British Jewish family and became a bar mitzvah at Wimbledon Synagogue, as Hey Alma reported in 2021. He read film and feminism at the University of Warwick, worked stand-up for years, and created the science fiction anthology Soulmates with Black Mirror writer Will Bridges. He is best known as Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, the retired-footballer-turned-coach whose growled monosyllables carry more feeling than most monologues; he also wrote for the series.
He won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for each of the first two seasons, in 2021 and 2022. He went on to co-create and star in the comedy-drama Shrinking.
