Craig Mazin was born in Brooklyn to Ashkenazi Jewish parents. After years writing film comedy he created, wrote and produced Chernobyl (2019) for HBO, a five-part account of the 1986 reactor disaster built on documentary research and on the cost of official lying; it won the Emmy for outstanding limited series and a BAFTA for his script. He then co-created The Last of Us with Neil Druckmann, the first video-game adaptation to be taken seriously as television drama.
