How & why

Al Franken was raised in a Reform Jewish home in Minneapolis and attended Temple Israel. He joined Saturday Night Live as a writer and performer for its first broadcast in 1975 and stayed, on and off, for fifteen years, winning five Emmy Awards and creating Stuart Smalley. He wrote several political bestsellers and served as United States Senator for Minnesota from 2009 to 2018.
