Biography

Charles Yanofsky is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Geneticist who demonstrated the colinearity of a gene and the protein it encodes.

How & why

A geneticist at Stanford, Yanofsky used the tryptophan biosynthesis pathway in the bacterium E. coli to prove experimentally that the linear order of a gene corresponds directly to the linear order of amino acids in its protein — the principle of colinearity. Born in New York to a Jewish family, he received the National Medal of Science for his work.
