Curt Stern is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Geneticist who demonstrated genetic crossing over and advanced human and radiation genetics.
Curt Stern was a German-American geneticist who in 1931 provided the first cytological proof of genetic crossing over, demonstrating in the fruit fly that recombination of genes is accompanied by physical exchange of chromosome parts. He went on to pioneer human genetics and the study of radiation effects on genes, and wrote a foundational textbook. He was Jewish and emigrated from Nazi Germany to the United States.
