Emilio Segrè is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; discovered the antiproton, Nobel Prize 1959

How & why

Segrè worked with Enrico Fermi in Rome before Italy's 1938 antisemitic racial laws cost him his university post and stranded him in the United States, where he settled at Berkeley. There he co-discovered the antiproton with Owen Chamberlain in 1955, confirming the existence of antimatter and earning the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physics; he had earlier helped discover the element technetium. He came from an Italian Jewish family.
