Origins and early life
Berr Isaac Berr de Turique was born at Nancy on 24 February 1745, a manufacturer and syndic of the Jews of Lorraine at a time when they had no civil existence in France.
Work and career
On 14 October 1789 he led a delegation of the Jews of Lorraine, Alsace and the Three Bishoprics to the bar of the Constituent Assembly and asked, in a speech that was printed and circulated, that men should look on them as their brothers. The Assembly hesitated for two years, granting citizenship in January 1790 to the Sephardi Jews of Bordeaux and Avignon alone; Berr kept writing, petitioning and answering, and on 27 September 1791 the Assembly recognised all Jews in France as active citizens without exception, the first such act anywhere in Europe.
He at once led the Jews of Nancy to the town hall to take the civic oath, and published his Lettre d'un citoyen, membre de la ci-devant communauté des Juifs de Lorraine, urging his community to take up the duties that came with the new rights. A translator of Naphtali Herz Wessely and a man of the Jewish Enlightenment, he sat in 1807 as one of the seventy-one members of Napoleon's Grand Sanhedrin. He died at Nancy on 14 November 1828.
