Wessely was a Hebrew grammarian, poet and leading figure of the Haskalah, the Jewish Enlightenment. His 1782 tract Words of Peace and Truth called for reform of Jewish education to include secular studies alongside Torah, and his biblical poetry and philology helped revive literary Hebrew. He worked closely with Moses Mendelssohn and was an observant Jew throughout his life.
