Peter Beinart

Peter Beinart is the son of Jewish immigrants from South Africa; his maternal grandmother was a Sephardic Jew from Egypt and his father's parents came from Lithuania. He keeps kosher, attends an Orthodox synagogue and sent his children to a Jewish day school. Editor of The New Republic from 1999 to 2006, he has written for Time, The Atlantic and The New York Review of Books, teaches journalism and political science at the Craig Newmark Graduate School at CUNY, is an editor-at-large at Jewish Currents and a contributing columnist at The New York Times. He is the author of four books, most recently Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza (2025). His positions on Israel — he argues for a single state with equal rights and has become one of the sharpest critics of the American Jewish establishment — are strongly contested within the Jewish world; they are recorded here as what he argues, not as a judgement on it.
