Franz Boas

Boas is regarded as the father of American anthropology; trained in physics and geography in Germany, he reoriented the field around cultural relativism, meticulous fieldwork, and the rejection of scientific racism, and he pioneered descriptive linguistics of Native American languages. He was raised in an assimilated German-Jewish family and identified as of Jewish origin throughout his life, facing antisemitism in both Germany and the United States.
