Bahya ben Asher ibn Halawa was a Spanish rabbi and Torah scholar, a pupil of Solomon ben Adret. His commentary on the Torah became one of the most widely studied of the Middle Ages because it wove together four levels of interpretation — plain meaning, homiletics, philosophical reason and Kabbalah — into a single work. He was a Jewish religious authority of Sephardic Spain.
