How & why

Origins and early life

Julien Samuel was born at Mulhouse on 10 October 1912, son of Moïse and Sara Samuel, in the Alsatian Jewry that had been German since 1871 and became French again in 1918.

Work and career

His whole adult life was spent inside the institutions of French Jewry, which is the route by which he appears here. Under the Occupation he worked for the Œuvre de secours aux enfants, the organisation that took Jewish children out of the internment camps and hid them across the unoccupied zone; in October 1942, in the children's home of Le Couret in the Haute-Vienne, he married Vivette Hermann, a volunteer worker from the camp at Rivesaltes, the two of them at the centre of the rescue and both hunted.

He left the OSE in 1950 to direct the Fonds social juif unifié, created that year to rebuild the Jewish community of France after the Shoah: schools, welfare, youth movements and, from the 1960s, the reception of the Jews arriving from North Africa. With Michel Salomon he co-directed L'Arche, the monthly founded in 1957 that became the principal French Jewish magazine. He died at Boulogne-Billancourt on 16 September 1981.
