Andrew Sessler was an accelerator physicist who advanced the theory of particle beams, co-invented mechanisms used in modern colliders and free-electron lasers, and directed Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He was also a prominent human-rights advocate who campaigned for persecuted scientists, notably Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov. Born to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, he was of documented Jewish origin.
