Origins and early life
Alfonso de la Caballería was born in the fifteenth century in Zaragoza, into the most powerful converso family of the Crown of Aragon — and his Jewish ancestry is named with a precision rare in this directory. The Libro Verde de Aragón, the genealogical register studied by scholars, records that his grandfather Fernando de la Caballería, born in 1360, had borne the Jewish name Bonafós before his conversion; his father, Pedro de la Caballería, was master of accounts of Aragon and counselor to King Alfonso V — this fiche corrects, on the sources, an earlier attribution of the name Bonafós to the father.
Work and career
A jurist, Alfonso rose to the summit of the royal administration: vice-chancellor of Aragon from 1484 and first president of the Council of Aragon from 1494 to 1506, he was among the closest advisers of Ferdinand the Catholic. Like every New Christian family of Aragon he was investigated by the Inquisition after the murder of the inquisitor Pedro Arbués in 1485, and was acquitted in 1501. History remembers one act above all: in 1492 he tried to prevent the decree expelling the Jews from Spain — and failed. He died around 1506.
