How & why

Gromov, a Russian-French geometer whose mother was Jewish, reshaped modern geometry with ideas such as Gromov–Hausdorff convergence, pseudoholomorphic curves and geometric group theory. Working at the IHÉS in France and at New York University, he received the Wolf Prize (1993) and the Abel Prize (2009).
