Hugo Dyonizy Steinhaus, mathématicien polonais, cofonda l'école mathématique de Lwów et, avec Stefan Banach, l'analyse fonctionnelle, donnant son nom au théorème de Banach–Steinhaus (principe de la borne uniforme). Il 'découvrit' Banach et contribua aux probabilités, aux mathématiques appliquées et à la théorie des jeux. Il était juif et survécut à la Seconde Guerre mondiale caché sous une fausse identité.
