Baruch Blumberg identifia l'antigène du virus de l'hépatite B dans les années 1960, travaux qui lui valurent le prix Nobel de médecine 1976 et menèrent au premier vaccin contre ce virus. Issu d'une famille juive américaine pratiquante, Blumberg offrit au monde le premier vaccin capable de prévenir un cancer humain (celui du foie).
