Yuli Khariton was a physicist who served as the chief scientific designer of the Soviet nuclear weapons program, directing the secret laboratory at Sarov (Arzamas-16) for decades. He trained under Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory and shaped much of Soviet nuclear physics. His father, journalist Boris Khariton, was Jewish.
