Yonatan Netanyahu

Yonatan (Yoni) Netanyahu was born in New York in 1946 and grew up largely in Israel, where he served in the Israel Defense Forces and rose to lieutenant colonel commanding Sayeret Matkal, the general staff reconnaissance unit. He fought in the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War before taking command of the unit. On 4 July 1976 he led the assault force in Operation Entebbe, the long-range raid on Entebbe Airport in Uganda that freed the hostages held there after an airliner hijacking; he was the only Israeli soldier killed in the assault, at the age of thirty. The operation was renamed Operation Yonatan in his memory, and he is buried on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
