Biography

Emmanuel Moreno is recognized among Israeli contributors to Heroes of Israel — Sayeret Matkal officer killed on a deep operation in Lebanon (2006)

How & why

Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Yehuda Moreno was born in Paris in 1971 to parents who had come to France from Morocco and Tunisia; the family moved to Israel when he was one, and he grew up in Jerusalem. Conscripted in 1990, he completed Sayeret Matkal's training in December 1992 and served in the unit for fourteen years, taking part in more operations than any other soldier in its history — almost all of them still classified. He was killed on 19 August 2006 near Baalbek in the Beqaa Valley, when the force he was operating with was exposed and came under heavy fire in the final days of the Second Lebanon War. Because of the sensitivity of those operations, the Israeli military censor still forbids publication of his photograph; he is the only Israeli soldier subject to such a restriction after his death.
