Yohanan bar Nappaha, usually called Rabbi Yohanan, was a leading Amora (Talmudic sage) of the Land of Israel who founded and led the great academy at Tiberias and is traditionally credited as a principal figure in compiling the Jerusalem Talmud. His halakhic and aggadic teachings pervade both the Jerusalem and Babylonian Talmuds, and he was regarded as the foremost rabbi of his generation. He was, of course, a Jewish sage of the Galilee.
