Yannai was a Jewish liturgical poet (payyetan) of Byzantine-era Galilee, one of the pioneers of the classical piyyut, credited as the founder of the 'kerovah' form of poems woven into the Amidah prayer. He was the first payyetan to sign his work with an acrostic and among the earliest to use end-rhyme; his poems, long lost, were largely rediscovered in the Cairo Genizah.
