Eleazar ha-Kalir was one of the earliest and most prolific Jewish liturgical poets (payyetanim), whose exact dates and homeland are debated, though he is usually placed in the Land of Israel around the 6th–7th century. He composed hundreds of piyyutim in an intricate, allusive Hebrew, many of which entered the fixed synagogue liturgy for festivals and special Sabbaths. His work profoundly shaped the Ashkenazi prayer tradition and later Hebrew poetry.
