William Friedkin's parents were Jewish emigrants from Ukraine; his family had fled a pogrom in 1903. He won the Academy Award for Best Director for The French Connection in 1971 — at thirty-two, then among the youngest ever — and directed The Exorcist, Sorcerer and To Live and Die in L.A. His documentary The People vs. Paul Crump helped win a stay of execution for its subject.
