He co-created thirtysomething, directed Glory — the story of the first Black regiment of the Union army — Legends of the Fall, The Last Samurai and Defiance, which tells of the Bielski brothers who sheltered more than 1,200 Jews in the Belarusian forest, and produced Shakespeare in Love, which won Best Picture in 1999.
