Werner Fenchel was a German-born mathematician who founded much of modern convex analysis, introducing Fenchel conjugate functions and Fenchel duality, tools now central to optimization theory. He was Jewish and fled Nazi Germany, spending most of his career in Denmark. During the war he escaped to Sweden with other Danish Jews.
