Werner Fenchel was a German-born Danish mathematician who founded much of modern convex analysis, giving his name to the Fenchel conjugate (Legendre–Fenchel transform) and Fenchel duality, tools now central to optimization. A Jewish émigré, he fled Nazi Germany to Denmark and, during the war, to Sweden, later shaping Danish mathematics at the University of Copenhagen.
