Arthur Erdelyi

Arthur Erdélyi was a Hungarian-born mathematician who became a leading authority on special functions and asymptotic analysis. He directed and co-authored the monumental reference works 'Higher Transcendental Functions' and 'Tables of Integral Transforms' (the 'Bateman Manuscript Project'), long indispensable to applied mathematics and physics. Born in Budapest to a Jewish family, he fled antisemitic persecution to Britain, where he became a professor at Edinburgh.
