Biography

Walter Gilbert is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — DNA Sequencing

How & why

Gilbert, born to a Jewish family in Boston, trained as a theoretical physicist before molecular biology drew him in at Harvard. With Allan Maxam he devised a chemical method to read the exact order of the bases in DNA, one of the first practical ways to sequence genes. For this he shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and he went on to co-found Biogen, helping launch the biotechnology industry.
